    Date of School:

    6 July 2015 to 17 July 2015

Arrival on the 5th of July and departure on the 17th of July.

This winter school will offer a basic introduction to computational and simulation methods used in physics based on the Matlab programming language. The school is aimed at 3rd year, honours level and starting MSc students in physics or applied mathematics having little or no programming experience. Lectures on the computational methods are complemented by hands-on computer lab sessions for an effective learning experience.

    Topics to be covered include:

    Introduction to Matlab
    Dynamical systems
    Numerical linear algebra
    Chaotic dynamics
    Random numbers
    Stochastic processes
    Monte Carlo methods

    Target audience:

3rd year, honours, and MSc students in physics or applied mathematics

Morning lectures on numerical methods, followed by supervised computer lab sessions in the afternoon.

    Stellenbosch University

Morning lectures will take place in the Physics Department.

Afternoon computer sessions will be held in the SU NARGA computer lab, based in the Physical Sciences building.
