Workshop on Large Deviations in Statistical Physics

    Conference week: 3-7 November 2014
Additional workshop week: 10-14 November 2014

National Institute for Theoretical Physics, Wallenberg Research Centre, Stellenbosch, South Africa

This workshop is a first at organizing a meeting focused explicitly on large deviation theory and its applications in statistical physics. It will provide a perfect opportunity for physicists and mathematicians to interact and present their work on these topics, as well as discuss future challenging problems. Topics to be covered include: equilibrium large deviations, long-range systems and nonconcave entropies, nonequilibrium large deviations, interacting particle systems, fluctuation symmetries, scaling and hydrodynamic limits, and rare event simulations.

A (1+1)-week workshop. The workshop proper, with scheduled talks, will take place in the first week; the second week is reserved for discussions, collaborations, and a light schedule of volunteered talks.

    Financial Assistance:

A few grants for students or young researchers will be available, preferentially (but not exclusively) for applicants from African countries. To apply for financial assistance, please register online on this page and upload supporting information (study record, list of publications, description of research interests).

The registration fee (including lunch, coffee breaks, and conference dinner) is ZAR 2700 for the first week. Those interested in participating during the second week will be communicated a fee for that week. Moreover, payment methods will be communicated once participation is confirmed.

A registration form is available on this page. Deadline for registration is 30 August 2014. Note that the number of participants is limited and early registration is therefore advisable.
