    Dear all,

    Stephane Peigne, SUBATECH Nantes, France, who is visiting our Department, will give a series of lectures. The goal of these lectures is to explain how the energy loss of a parton (quark or gluon) crossing a nuclear medium can be derived in a simple and semi-heuristic way, however in the well-defined framework of perturbative Quantum ChromoDynamics (pQCD).

    The lectures are addressed to Honours, MSc and PhD students, but everybody is most welcome.


    Energy loss of colour charges in nuclear media
    Lecture 1 -- context and motivations --
    Very basic introduction to QCD and the quark-gluon plasma: the QCD lagrangian, running coupling and asymptotic freedom, some phenomenological successes of pQCD, the quark-gluon plasma and its main signatures, elliptic flow and jet-quenching.

    Lecture 2 -- parton collisional energy loss --
    After recalling two important signals for the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP), namely elliptic flow and jet-quenching, I will start to address the determination of parton energy loss in a QGP, by presenting the perturbative framework, the notions of Debye screening and mean free path, and the distinction between collisional and radiative energy loss. Finally I will present heuristic estimates of collisional energy loss.

    Lecture 3 -- parton radiative energy loss --
    As an introduction, I will sketch how QCD factorization is used in the context of heavy-ion collisions to predict jet-quenching, and define the medium-induced energy loss. Then the talk will be divided in two main parts:
    - radiation in a single scattering: QED vs. QCD, coherence and formation time.
    - medium-induced radiation: Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal effect in QED and QCD.
    If some time is left, the effect of the "dead cone" on the radiation spectrum of a heavy quark will also be discussed.
