Abstract: The ancient Mayan calendar ends in 2012 and it has been predicted that this means the end of the world. The astronomical phenomena (solar storms, planets or asteroids crashing into the earth, planetary alignments etc) cited as the cause of the end of the world will be examined.

Prof Bell-Burnell is the co-discoverer of pulsars, on 28 November 1967. She is Visiting Professor at Oxford University and a Fellow of Mansfield College. She has received many honorary awards, and in 2008 she became the first female president of the Institute of Physics (United Kingdom).
